LED Life Span

What is LED Life Span: -

ILED Life span can be measured that how long it will take for its brightness (lumen) to drop to 70% of its initial levels. Generally accepted levels are 70% of the original value. These are called L70 reading & LM 80 test defines these.

Factor Affecting LED Life Span :-

LED Drivers: -

As we know capacitors are a very important part of LED driver. In LED Lights some companies use low rated capacitors (Voltage, Hours, ripple). Later on due to some factors such as heat & high temperature it may have shorter lifespan than anticipated.

Pyrotech offers LED Drivers with electrolytic capacitors which can tolerate heat & temperature at very high level and this increases the life span of LED light.

External Environment :-

Surge can reduce LED Life and can also cause catastrophic failure. Ideally LED Driver should have protection features to take care of LED's during surge.

Ambient Temperature :-

The higher ambient temperature increases the junction temperature which reduces life span of led.

Thermal Design :-

Poor heat dissipation increases junction temperature and increase in junction temperature reduces life.

PCB :-

Use of Metal PCB's ensures heat is dissipated onto heat sink as against FR based material. Usually Aluminum is used in metal PCB's.

Make of LED :-

Use of branded LED's such as CREE, Lumiled, OSRAM, Nichia etc. which have LM80 report helps ensuring consistent color lots, Lumen levels. Also, ceramic sustrate LED's are better than plastic package.
